150 Techs to Be Pursued as
Int'l Standards by 2010
Prepares for the implementation of the international standard on RFID
Korea plans to propose as international standard candidates 150 technologies whose development is under way by 2010 in a strategy of securing growth engines that will drive the Korean economy.
Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy said it has drafted the so-called 2006 New Growth Industry International Standardization Road Map calling for submitting some 150 own technologies, to be developed in the new growth engine industries by 2010, as international standard candidates.
The technologies Korea envisions as international standards include the nano-technology process and semiconductor sensor in the next-generation semiconductor sector; intelligent robot platform in the intelligent robot sector; video compaction in the digital content sector; and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in the software solution area.
KATS said the five-year new growth engine industry International Standardization plan, drafted in the late 2003, paid off: Korea's 184 own technologies have been designated as international standards or are now under discussions.
KATS plans to propose 35 technologies, including RFID and MPEGs, as international standards candidates.
In a related development, KATS said the government plans to draw up an implementation guideline on the international standard of RFID which has been virtually confirmed in a recent ISO session.
KATS said the International Standards Organization convened the general meeting on RFID in Moscow on May 26 and completed the discussion on the publication of RFID standard - virtually confirmation of RFID standard.
In reality, an international standard on RFID has been badly needed worldwide since four or five incompatible communication methods on RFID are used.
KATS plans to ask relevant government agencies to amend domestic regulations on frequency standards in a bid to overhaul the infrastructure for industrializing the RFID sector.
The government plans to draw up implementation guidelines on the international standard of RFID so that such damages as interferences among FRID systems in the public and industry sectors can be minimized on top of domestic conformity of international standards. nw
