Janghung Dam Officially Dedicated
Relieves water shortages in 9 cities and counties in the western region of South Jeolla Province
The Janghung Dam, designed to supply water and control flood water in the western region of South Jeolla Province, has been dedicated after some 10 years of construction.
About 1,000 people, including Minister of Construction and Transportation Choo Byung-jik, South Jeolla Province Gov. Park Jun-yong and representatives, participated in the dedication ceremony held on June 8.
The dam with a capacity of 190,000,000 cubic meters, equivalent to that of the Cheongpyeong Dam in Gangwon Province, supplies 130,000,000 cubic meters of water to nine cities and counties in the western area of South Jeolla Province, including Mokpo, Janghung, Gangjin and Haenam, per annum, relieving water shortages there.
MOCT Minister Choo said, "The existing real estates, including Daebul and Samho industrial complexes, as well as the newly established Muan Industrial City, no longer worry over water shortages."
It could lessen flood damages in the downstream of the Tamjin River by controlling 8 million cubic meters in the case of flooding, while generating hydroelectric power of 4,500Mwh per annum, the electricity used by 500 households for one year.
In order to minimize environmental impact, trees fitting for the neighborhood forest areas have been transplanted on the sides of the dam. A fish passage route is created between the upstream and downstream of the dam, in addition to the fish spawning area set up in the reservoir.
A waste treatment plant and a wetland are set up in a bid to preserve the quality of the river at the upstream of the dam. The dam is also equipped with water quality preserving systems as oxygen-supplying aerators and water quality measuring devices.
The dam project expanded the district community's participation and support. The existing village is reinstated for the public to have a glimpse into the lives of the traditional farming families and eco-friendly parks along the rivers are set up as part of the efforts to capitalize the neighborhood areas of the dam as local cultural space.
The government has provided 23.4 billion won in a fund for implementing projects for renovating the affected area, including road pavement and farming irrigation roads. Authorities plan to funnel about 1 billion won in projects designed to improve the living conditions of the affected area per annum.
Lee Jin-oh, chief of the Janghung Dam Construction Corp at the Korea Water Resources Corp., said, "Tourism and recreation concepts are added now that the paradigm of water resources development has changed.
With the dedication of the Janghung Dam, the numbers of tourists are expected to surge as the dedication of the Janghung Dam makes the Damjin River, the clear sea and the lake tourist attractions. nw
The newly dedicated Janhung Dam is designed to supply water, produce electricity and control floods.
