Chairman Chung of Samdaeyang Development Co. receives Gold Medal

I won the medal due to the hard work put in by some 30,000 specialized construction firms in the country, despite the difficult conditions in the way of the industry,"claimed chairman of the Samdaeyang Development Co. Chung Jang-yul, as he received the Order of Industrial Merit, the Gold Tower medal from the government on Construction Day June 19.
The specialized construction firms are engaged in the areas of construction where special technologies are required such as building tunnels with red bricks, solidifying building foundations, and digging tunnels, among others, involved with tough works mostly taken care of small construction firms on subcontract bases. Chairman Chung has been running the company for over 30 years with its employees totaling 700 and its sales last year came to 77 billion won, which is large among these small specialized construction firms. The company participated in such large projects as the Busan subway, the Samsung Semiconductor plant, the Incheon International Airport, World Cup Stadiums, Sangam and Daegu, among others, as subcontractors.
He said people would think about three dirty businesses, and hard laborers when they hear something about the construction industry, but it is no longer so. These days, construction workers work in a pleasant and safe environment, thanks to the development of construction technology.
He claimed that construction workers totaled 1.4 million in 2004, but the number has been down by 100,000 and further more about 63.8 percent of them are 40 years or older. "The industry should train more young workers by making it a popular place to work for,"he said, adding,"each construction firm should make efforts to make itself a popular working place for young people so that the industry would have a bright future." nw
