Kumho Construction Vice Chairman Shin wins gold medal for role in IT technology

Vice Chairman and CEO of Kumho Construction and Engineering Co. Shin Hoon won the Order of Industrial Merit, the Gold Tower Medal from the government on Construction Day June 19. The honor was given to the construction company official in recognition for his contribution to the construction industry in the area of the introduction of the high-tech IT to the industry, making the industry to be reborn as an industry with a vision that can create social high added-value.
The vice chairman said he is very honored to receive the medal and would like to share it with the officers and employees of the company. He has been well-known for his leading role in management reform in the communication departments of both Korean Air and Asiana Airlines.
When he assumed the presidency of the company, he thought that the company needed its own construction technology to revive itself. He told company workers to look out for new high value-added projects in a way to find new growth engines to resurrect the company. As a result, the company developed technologies for the construction of airports and water treatment, "KIDEA construction technology."He said Kumho will expand into overseas construction market, especially in the environment related areas with its KIDEA technology and Southeast Asian countries, in particular.
The vice chairman made every one at the construction company concerned due to the fact that he is a professional communication expert, not well-experienced in construction area when he first came to the company in 2002. But he soon laid the concern to rest by cutting the debt ratio of the company to 150 percent from 369 percent when he took over in 2002 through management reform based on the IT technology. He turned the company around in three years with the company setting new records in sales revenues in the past 2 years.
Shin commented that the introduction of the IT technology has made the construction company's management transparent and office procedures speedy and helped the entire construction industry to reach higher stages in advancement. This medal, too, has recognized his contribution to the construction industry in creating higher social values and sustainable management.
A graduate of Seoul National University Law College, he won the award from the SNU Industry Academic Foundation as "Best CEO for Shining Korea"in October last year. He is scheduled to receive the Korea Productivity Grand Award this month. nw
