Samsung Electronics:
A Trendsetter in
New Mobile Wave
Displays a wide range of the latest chip products for Taiwanese companies during 3rd SMS Forum 2006
Samsung Mobile Solution Forum 2006, held in Taiwan on March 21, attracted keen attention from about 1,000 Taiwanese participants, mostly from PDA, handset and ODM (Original Development Manufacturing) companies.
Samsung Electronics, emerging as a total solution provider with the world's top-notch edge based on its 14-year-old leading position in the global memory market and the mythical development of Flash Memory chips, organized SMS Forum 2006, marking the third event.
The participants from Samsung Electronics included Hwang Chang-kyu, Samsung Electronics president of semiconductor, and other executives of the division, including those with memory, system LSI business departments and LCD division. In an extraordinary move, executives from Samsung SDI also attended the forum to explain its development of high-capacity lithium ion cells for mobile devices.
Samsung Electronics President Hwang delivered his opening address during a ceremony for opening the forum, followed by speeches by Woo Nam-sung, vice president of mobile solution development, Chung Tae-sung, executive director of memory product planning team and Kim Hyung-geol, executive director of mobile display development team.
The afternoon session comprised of seminars on seven areas, including display, mobile CPU, camera solution and DDI solution.
During the forum, Samsung Electronics displayed such new technologies for next-generation mobile devices as Samsung Electronics Semiconductor Division' Chip Triple Gate technology and top-capacity lithium ion cells on top of attachable memory card adopting large-capacity MLC NAND Flash Memory OneNAND, DVB-H-type broadcasting chip solution and the world's first mobile AP for digital TV images.
SMS Forum 2006 proved to be a world-class mobile forum as 10 Taiwanese companies, including HTC, MiTAC, Lie On and Tom Tom, demonstrated such latest devices as PDAs,
smartphones and navigation products outfitted with mobile solutions produced by Samsung Electronics.
In his speech, Samsung Electronics President Hwang presented a new mobile vision with Samsung Electronics taking the initiative, saying that Samsung Electronics'cutting edge semiconductor technology forms a force behind the so-called New Mobile Wave, a combination of mobile convergence and mobile divergence. The prediction is that the mobile industry will see convergence and divergence trends have synergy effects - the New Mobile Wave.
Hwang noted that now that the New Mobile Wave tends to witness digital devices have more functions and higher performances, it is more important that such mobile solution providers as Samsung Electronics need to sympathize with customers. He also pledged that Samsung Electronics will strive to become a
lient-friendly, familiar mate,'based on its top-notch semiconductor technology prowess.
Samsung Mass-Produces
1GB Flash Memory by 70-nm Process
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology is now mass producing 70nm 1Gb OneNAND¢â, a widely used memory device that provides higher performance over conventional flash devices. The higher-speed memory is targeted toward a wide range of applications beyond mobile handsets including memory cards for digital cameras and use in hybrid hard disk drives. By moving to 70nm designs, Samsung has achieved a 70% greater efficiency than the 90nm processing currently used throughout the industry.
Samsung's 70nm OneNAND fuses together the rapid boot-up and data-read functions of NOR flash memory, plus the high-capacity data storage and fast writing capabilities of NAND flash memory. The 70nm device is now designed into well over 100 mobile products, with new demand coming from market segments for digital cameras, set-top boxes and digital TVs. Last month, at the 3rd annual Samsung Mobile Solution Forum, Samsung also unveiled a high-speed memory card equipped with OneNAND.
The OneNAND device has a sustained read speed of 108MB/s, which is 60% faster than previous 90nm OneNAND device. The 70 nm OneNAND supports a synchronous clock frequency of 83MHz, and offers enhanced compatibility with the clock frequencies of a wide range of mobile products. nw
