The 21st KAIF/KNS Annual Conference deals with updates on nuclear power
Scores of international and Korean experts on nuclear power got together at Sheraton Grande Walkerhill Hotel in Seoul on April 19-21 to discuss issues on nuclear power under the theme "Sustainable Development of Nuclear Energy: Current Issues & Challenges."The 21st KAIF/KNS Annual Conference was organized by the Korea Atomic Industrial Forum, Inc. (KAIF) and Korean Nuclear Society.
Han Joon-ho, chairman-CEO of KEPCO and concurrently chairman of the conference, gave an opening speech during an opening session held on April 20, while Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of Science and Technology Kim Woo-sik delivered a congratulatory speech.
In his speech, Deputy Prime Minister Kim expressed hope nuclear power will usher in an era of "renaissance"with its expanded role as energy resources. He called for sparing no efforts to improve public acceptance of nuclear power, saying that "The lesion was learned that the development of nuclear power cannot be conceived with public agreement and support.
"KAIF Chairman Han urged the global nuclear power community to pursue global cooperation and joint participation to overcome all problems and challenges, saying that "The new economic order of the 21st century and a change in energy paradigm demand our endless changes and innovations." "Each country is scrambling to ensure stable energy supplies and accelerate clean energy supplies in the wake of its entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and continued crude oil price hikes. In reality, nuclear power not only serves its role as a clean, environmentally-friendly energy source, but also posts a fast growth as high-tech science technologies of 21st century let alone energy supplies utilizing diverse application technologies,"he noted.
