KAL Captures ATW's Phoenix Award
Praised for innovative goal of becoming a global top airline
Korean Air has won the coveted ATW's Phoenix Award in recognition of its efforts to reform constitution and raise the value for customers. KAL achieved a feat of grabbing the coveted award, the equivalent of the Academy Award in the aviation industry, for the second time following is win of the "Cargo Carrier of the Year"Award in 2002
Air Transport World (ATW) presented the Phoenix Award to KAL during a prize-awarding ceremony held at Swissotel "The Stamford"in Singapore on February 20.
ATW has awarded prizes in 12 categories, including passenger service, cargo transport, regional airline, aircraft manufacturing and market development, since 1974. The seven best companies were selected in seven out of the total 12 categories during this year's screening. By category, KAL won the Phoenix Award while Cathay Pacific was presented with the Airline of the Year. The Passenger Service and Aircraft Manufacturing awards went to Jet Blue and Embraer, respectively. ATW awards are dubbed as the Academy Awards of the aviation industry due to its just screening and objectivity.
Perry Flint, ATW managing editor, said the competition for winning the Phoenix Award was more competitive this time, and KAL was picked up for having made progress in organizational and overall duty changes with the goal of evolving into a top 10 airline by 2010.
KAL Chairman-CEO Cho Yang-ho said, "KAL has put more energy into improving its constitution in order to help its adapt to external environment conditions and raise the value for clients to provide the best traveling services to customers. He also commented that the award amounted to an encouragement to KAL striving for the top of the industry.
KAL captured the Phoenix Award following the Cargo Carrier of the Year in 2002, coming closer to becoming a winner of the most prominent" Airline of the Year"Award. The award goes to airlines who have won prizes in two or more categories. nw
