Four business leaders win the prestigious award


Kumho Asiana Chairman Park Sam-koo, SK Telecom Vice Chairman Cho Jung-nam, Gwang Dong Pharm Chairman Choi Soo-boo and GE Korea Chairman Lee Chae-wook have been awarded with the CEO of the Year Award by the Korea Management Association.
An award-presenting ceremony for the 38th CEO of the Year Award was held at the Seoul Lotte Hotel in downtown Seoul on March 14.
Every year KMA selects a CEO or CEOs with the most outstanding achievements and awards the CEO of the Year Awards. KMA announced the winners of the ward after two months of screening from last December.
The four brings to 89 the number of the winners of the CEO of the Year Award. The winners include former LG Group Chairman Koo Ja-kyung, the late SK Group Chey Jong-hyun and other Korean industry leaders.
A screening committee on the CEO of the Year Award, headed by Daekyo Chairman Song Ja, selected the winners after scrutinizing candidates recommended by 330 representatives from several walks of life and opinion leaders.
The screening committee put its initial screening focus on financial soundness and profitability of the companies of candidates, and it also assessed such criteria as candidates'management tenets, management capability and social contribution to society. This year's screening focus was on whether candidates suggested hope and vision on the take-off of the Korean economy amid expectations of an economic turnaround or have contributed to strengthening industrial foundation with ideas and passion.
Kumho Asiana Chairman Park was praised for elevating his group to a sound corporation put on the top 10 ranking in Corporate Korea through ethical management.
SK Telecom Vice Chairman Cho has been credited with having contributed to developing Korea into a global IT powerhouse by upgrading domestic mobile telecommunication services.
Gwang Dong Pharm Chairman Choi was given high marks for his making efforts to make traditional Korean Oriental medicine scientific-oriented, while GE Korea Chairman Lee was recognized for translating a crisis into an opportunity for making a new take-off through innovation. nw
