KOSEP eyes new and renewable energy development
Park Hee-gab, president-CEO of Korea South-East Power Co. (KOSEP) has urged his executives and staff to build up futuristic growth engines to attain sustainable development.
In his New Year's message, KOSEP President Park said, "The world is now entering a period in which technological innovations are accelerated, competition is getting fierce and globalization is widespread. Sustainable management based on the environment, ethics and transparent management have been recognized as new paradigm."He expressed the hope that "the year 2006 will be a year for launching a full-fledged push for realizing a vision of becoming a "global power leader"following a preparatory period."First, CEO Park said, KOSEP will put more energy into building up a futuristic growth foundation to brace for a borderless, unlimited competition. "The most important thing KOSEP has to do is to establish a future growth foundation to realize the goal of evolving into a global company,"he noted. "During this year, KOSEP will have to push a project for constructing additional units of the Yonghung Thermal Power Plant, continue to develop six core technologies, including the ones on combustion in a bid to preempt core technologies and differentiate other power companies and establish a regime for cultivating expertise manpower."Second, he said, KOSEP will focus on enhancing reliability and efficiency of power. "Boosting reliability and efficiency of power facilities for a stable and economical supply of power is not only a matter of our profits, but also our mission. KOSEP needs to accumulate technological power and experiences to stabilize new facilities and cope with aging ones."Third, Park said, KOSEP will meet power plant construction schedules and maximize its capability on power plant construction. KOSEP accumulated technology and experiences on Korea's first 800,000kW-class power plant. Efforts will be made to construct advanced new high-performance, high-quality versions by capitalizing the expertise and experiences on power plant construction. He urged his staff to make it sure to complete the ongoing Yonghung Thermal Power Units 3 and 4 and Yecheon Pumped Power Storage Power Plant and ensure the quality of the new versions by making a scrutiny into the weak points of the old unit versions.
Fourth, he called for establishment of a desirable corporate culture. A corporation with a desirable corporate culture utilizes each individual's s "mind energy"capability and obtains organizational synergetic effects by harmonizing and combining each staff member's competence.
New and renewable energy
Samcheonpo Thermal Power Plant is emerging as a power plant mecca of producing new and renewable energy sources.
KOSEP officially dedicated a 100kW-class photovoltaic energy power unit and new and renewable energy publicity hall in a ceremony attended by Goseong County Mayor Lee Hak-ryeol and officials at the Ministry of Commerce, Energy and Industry in charge of new and renewable energy and other agencies on December 29.
The facilities were constructed at a cost of 1.7 billion won during the period between last May and last December. The photovoltaic energy power unit, built with homegrown technology, paved the way for setting technological levels by formulating guidelines on domestic standard design, construction and functions. The unit is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 87 tons.
The expertise KOSEP acquired on the construction and operation of the photovoltaic unit will be made available for bench marking of other domestic companies, KOSEP officials said.
CEO Park said in his speech during the ceremony that KOSEP will put more energy into developing and disseminating new and renewable energy technologies.
Earlier, KOSEP inked a memorandum of understanding on joint hydrogen fuel cell power generation projects with POSCO on October 20.
Under the deal, KOSEP will undertake a 250kW-class fuel cell power pilot project at Bundang Combined Cycle Power Plant in an effort to develop the technologies on the operation and management of the new energy source. The project will be expanded to work on a megawatt-class one. If and when the project is completed as planned, the Bundang Combined Cycle Power Plant will likely be transformed into the largest environmentally-friendly fuel cell power generation complex in Korea, KOSEP officials said.
Unlike new and renewable energy sources, fuel cell is thought to emerge as a core technology in the futuristic hydrogen economy because it is not affected by the natural environment and is efficient due to simple energy conversion and power generation through chemical reaction. The Korean government has already designated fuel cell, one of the futuristic 10 tasks that will serve as national driving forces designed to raise the per capita national income to $20,000 and change the Korean economy into an advanced one.
In a related development, KOSEP signed an agreement with Chansung Energy Co. to install a solar energy cell system at Bundang Combined Cycle Power Plant on July 11.
Nearly 90 percent of solar energy is collected not only on a clear day but also in a cloudy weather to provide indoor lighting. It is a technology contributing to an improvement of indoor environment.
KOSEP assisted Chansung Energy's project to develop the technology and commercialize it. The power company provided support to the new and renewable energy company in acquiring a New Technology certificate on the technology.
An experiment on the solar cell system, conducted at the Bundang Combined Cycle Power Plant and Samchonpo Thermal Power Plant last year, turned out to be effective in saving energy. KOSEP's decision to expand the solar energy cell system could save 690MWh in electricity per annum. nw
