KOMIPO seeks strategic management reform

Korea Midland Power Co. (KOMIPO) president Chung Jang-sup urged his executives and staff to proactively take the lead in the changes of electricity industry.
In his New Year speech, KOMIPO President Chung suggested a management innovation to make a systemic and strategic system. He said the company will device 'KOMIPO New Management Strategies'and related mid- and long-term reform plans, based on which the 100 big agendas are drafted and will be implemented with its full capacity.
Those agendas will be selected according to a principle of "Choice and Concentration,"aiming at developing featured renovation activities and fostering creative leaders.
He also called for aggressive investments in strategic "Blue Ocean"businesses. He sees this as a breakthrough for creating a new and more profitable revenue structure. He said the company should find out its own Blue Ocean in overseas markets which have unlimited demand and more opportunities, and expand its businesses in the field where it has a possibility for specialization of its business.
As for the domestic energy industry, he emphasized the new & renewable energy development business as a countermeasure against the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). He said KOMIPO should proactively explore and expand "Blue Ocean"areas through such diversified power generating projects.
The next goal President Chung announced was a future-oriented clean and transparent management. He said, The critical element that decides the competitiveness of a company changes according to the changes of times, and these days, we are witnessing a very remarkable and positive trend where the 'corporate ethic'and 'environment-friendly management'have significant influence."Last year, the company declared an ethic platform which was a new combined version of the existing ethical chapter of ethical principles and codes of conduct. The KOMIPO president said the company will declare its determination to be a transparent and responsible company, and will beef up various management activities for its partners and customers.
As for the increasingly intensifying environmental standards, the ISO14001 environmentally friendly management system will be maintained and thorough end-of-pipe management will be implemented. The president also pledged that the company will expand the reuse the power plant by-products and prevent public grievances related with environmental problems thereby consolidating its image as an environment-friendly power plant.
Concluding his speech, president Chung stressed the need of energizing corporate morale and the harmonization of labor and management. He said the company will support sound labor union activities and implement various programs that involves families of staffs in an effort to develop a vital and harmonious corporate culture. As a part of those programs, KOMIPO will select the best plant operator and give prizes to the selectees, in order to stir up the morale of staffs and imbue their minds with employee loyalty. The company is also planning to help its staff members pursue individual self-development and professional certificate acquisition, to enhance the job satisfaction of employees.
Besides, President Chung called for all the employees to exert their utmost to realize KOMIPO's new year goals like the optimization of its power plants and establishment of advanced global management system by using JB Comprehensive Information System. And he also stressed the importance of the capacity of individual employee for the development of the company.
Since its inception, KOMIPO has consistently implemented various management innovation programs. Recently, it was ranked in the leading group in an innovation survey of 212 public corporations, which was conducted by the Ministry of Planning and Budget (MPB). And this power generation company became the first public corporation to acquire the five-stage National Productivity Management System (NPMS) certified by Korea Production Center in March 2005. Last year, the company staged an ambitious initiative, "Neo 2020 Drive" which aims at raising its status to the ranks of innovative specialized energy companies.
