Endless Pursuit on the
Meaning of Karma
A string of thread has a special meaning to artist Lee Yang-sup. To him, it is a connector which brings people together. Through philosophical speculation and anguish, he chases the meaning of human relationship, especially karma.
He colors sliding screen paper using oriental painting dyestuffs. And he attaches threads on it in his own original and unique way, expressing the image of karma he thinks.
What he uses are mostly from the nature that are mixtures of natural materials.
For examples, those comfort-giving light ocherous color is the outcome of real yellow earth applied on the paper. By expressing his imagination with one drop of dyes, he symbolizes the nature of karma that lasts forever after once people get acquainted. Seeing karma as a kind of ring, he connects various materials using threads. Lee, who has excellent and keen insight in terms of Buddhism, chases strong and crystal-clear pure spirit like morning dew.
Lee Yang-sup finished the highest course at the Graduate School of Hongik University. This is his sixth private exhibition. He participated in many group exhibitions, such as "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow of Cheonggecheon (Seoul Art Association, 2005)"and "Korean Art Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan (On invitation by Korean Embassy to Japan)."And, last May, he took part in the KAFF L.A. Art Fair 2005 on the subject of environment where his works depicted small living creatures which have to survive even in the rubbish heap. He pointed that it was the human beings who polluted our surrounding unconsciously and said he to send such a message to give an opportunity for audiences to think an alternative of keeping nature. His works gained public favor.
