Recreation of Ancient
Korean Spirit
Painter Park creates his own painting style to bring to life ancient Korean relics
Korean-style painter Park Byung-bae says the Korean people keep ancient myths and tales in their whimsical memories. What had been happening in this land before the formation of human society? If we don't have knowledge for myths, we won't be able to have the capacity to appreciate beautiful artwork and understand most of literature. Understanding myths and tales increases more happiness and virtues.
I created most simplistic artwork stressing direct perception with stirred-up factors and literary patterns. Most primitive feeling for life and mystically limitless literary imaginative power have been made possible, without the need for explanation, allowing free talks on our people's myths and tales.
My art pieces in a variety of colors such as brown, blue and black painted with natural color paints made from mountain mulberry and grapes appear rough and tough. They are so because I wanted to paint ancient tales of Goguryeo Kingdom, the image of ancient relics in lines.
I try to turn into an image of golden crowns of Silla Dynasty, to make themes from them to recreate the courage of the Korean people through our forbears'relics. "I want to recreate those that have been disappeared through my paintings so that many people can see them."My work on Silla gold crown series have been painted with acryl as bases with natural colors to express diversification
Our forbears were very creative and to recreate them, one has to have creative energy so that the limitation of Korean-style painting can be overcome. It is colorful to create the past and in order to discover spiritual stuff, one has to continue to make approaches. Originally, he specialized in the Oriental painting, especially, the literary artist? style. He was a student of professor Hong Seok-chang of the Hongik University for a long time.
He has now been able to break out on his own and became a pioneer in an independent style of ink painting; His artwork now are made of acryl and natural color with indentations with themes that come naturally to him. They appear mystical, valuable, undeterred and gentle. He would like to collect ancient relics, which made him a connoisseur of antiques and study ancient painting. He currently is a lecturer at Hongik University. His artwork were displayed in many art exhibitions including the L.A. Art Fair through Jim Harter Gallery this year and 99 Artist & Tour of America through L.A. 825 Gallery. His art pieces were shown at the 100 Best Art Invitational Korean Modern Art Exhibition held at the Insa Gallery in Seoul. His artwork also were presented at Kongpyong Art Center in 2002. nw
