Kudo for GS Caltex Chairman Hur
Chairman Hur wins the highest medal given to civilians for his work on KBCSD
GS Caltex Chairman & Ceo Hur Dong-Soo received the Order of Civil Merit Mugunghwa Medal at a ceremony for the 10th Environment Day with the declaration for the national sustainable development vision held at COEX in southern Seoul on June 4. The medal is the highest one given to civilians in recognition of their social services.
Chairman Hur has been credited for developing a corporate paradigm to ?o-exist?with the society by setting up the Korea Business Council for Sustainable Development (KBCSD) in March 2002, which has become a channel for corporate recommendations for improvement of the environment and discussions with the government.
KBCSD, established to facilitate businesses to contribute to sustainable development by doing their social duties to spur economic development and environmental preservation, has been making efforts to cooperate with WBCSD and PCSD to drum up concern for environmental preservation.
Chairman Hur, since his entry into the oil refinery in 1973, is an energy expert who has worked hard to make the energy industry an environment-friendly one. He made a great contribution to the growth of GS Caltex as a backbone of national economic development. He especially steered his company to expand into the petrochemical business, a basis of the national economy and people? lives, which is world-class in scale and competitiveness.
He introduced the leak detection and repair system to reduce inflammable chemical waste, along with his efforts to lower CO2s in exhaust discharges in honor of the Kyoto protocol to preserve climate environment. He also saw that the telemetering system is installed in all smoke stacks to measure pollutants. He also had his hand in importing the world? largest waste water recycling facility, in addition to playing a big role in reducing climate pollution by installing boilers that can catch heat and recycle them, which otherwise would have been wasted.
He also expanded the use of LNG, a clean energy, which shows his dedication as an integrated energy service leader.
Chairman Hur's environment-friendly management philosophy is clearly seen in his establishment of the KBCSD. His concern for sustainable development grew out of his awareness for the preservation of environment and idea that businesses should not only pursue profit, but also public interest as part of their social responsibilities.
Chairman Hur set up the KBCSD in 2002 with the idea that the environment committee of the Federation of Korean Industries(FKI) should overcome its limits and expand the practice of sustainable development management to all industrial sectors in the country. It currently has some 31 companies as its members including Samsung Electronics, POSCO and SK, among others.
The chairman pushed for KBCSD's partnership with a world-class industrial organization, WBCSD, and a government organization for sustainable development, the Presidential Commission for Sustainable Development, to forge a high-standing image for KBCSD.
Chairman Hur clarified his vision that KBCSD member firms should be able to maximize their values, while KBCSD makes contributions to the nation's environment and economy. He has been working on a plan to have the CEOs of each member company head a subcommittee and publish research reports on studies made on environment management and share the successful experiences on sustainable development management.
Hur, as the first chairman of the KBCSD, established a solid foundation for sustainable development and further strengthened its base as the second chairman, making himself a top authority on sustainable development.
He was promoted to president & CEO of GS Caltex in 1994 as an energy expert who led environment-friendly changes for the oil refining industry. He earned his doctorate and master's degree in chemical engineering at the University of Wisconsin after graduating from Yonsei University with a degree in chemical engineering. nw
