Microsoft Lab in Seoul
- Lab to focus on development of terminals jointly with Korean firms
Microsoft Korea opened on March 7 its Mobile Innovation Lab at the Realizing Potential Room in the POSCO Building in Samsung-dong, southern Seoul.
Among the dignitaries attending the event included Minister of Information and Communication Chin Dae-je and Microsoft Senior Vice President Pieter Knook.
The lab plans to cooperate with Korea's world-class mobile companies to jointly develop a superior next-generation mobile technology. A team of technicians from the Microsoft head office in Seattle will directly participate in the lab's activities and maintain close cooperation with their Korean counterparts for achieving an innovative progress in technology,SVP Knook said.
"Microsoft is very high on Korean IT companies' world infrastructure network and understand the importance of its investment in Korea for its continued growth" the Microsoft official said.
Korea's mobile industry sector has been drawing a keen attention in the world and Microsoft understands the importance of the industry for its mobile technology development, especially, in the areas of manufacturing of terminals, communication
service, information service and content providers.
The lab is part of Microsoft's long-term investment plan for Korea and is designed to create an environment in which it will cooperate with superior Korean firms in the mobile sector for joint development of technology along with investment.
Microsoft plans to relocate part of its Mobile and Embedded Devices Division to its Korean lab for close cooperation with Korean manufacturers for the development of next-generation terminals.
From this year, the lab will have 15 researchers who will have close cooperation with Korean manufacturers for joint development of technology. The lab will make continuous investments in its operations and its staff could reach as many as 30 with some recruited from Korea. In the next three years, Microsoft Korea will invest $10 million annually in manpower as well as for the development of software. nw
