INI Steel Captures Environmental Management Award
- Taking credit for keeping scrap irons from damaging environment

INI Steel Co.(Vice Chairman and CEO Kim Moo-il) is this year's recipient of the Environmental Management Award at the 30th National Quality Management Convention held Nov.19 at COEX in southern Seoul.
The steelmaker won the award for its contribution to collecting scrap iron pieces and using them to make steel products, which left alone uncollected would have caused environmental damage.
The nation's largest electric-furnace steelmaker has been cited for its role of collecting these metal pieces to clean up environment.
Since its establishment in 1953, the steel company has been engaged in the effort to make environment clear true to its managerial objective dedicated to the preservation of environment. The company's managerial policies of trust, transparency and worksite management have paid off and its been highly successful in its operation to produce steel products basic to practically all industries on the same loop as the nation's economic development.
The steel maker's steady effort to keep environment clean jointly with the regional society has won deserved recognition as the company participated in the campaign to plant 2.5 million tree siblings around Incheon in 1999.
In 2000, the company had been at the forefront of efforts to keep its production activity clean as well as protect environment from being damaged so much so that it was selected as a model firm in the area of environmental protection in 2002 by the Gyeong-In Regional Environment Office.
Recognizing environmental management as a top factor in management, the company won the ISO 14001 environmental certificate in 2003 and built the environment management system. The company also captured the top green managerial award, and named the excellent firm for environment protection in Incheon.
The steel maker set up a long-term vision of becoming the world's first rate "Green and Global Enterprise," with contribution to national development and the details of its push included the production of H-beam, tempcore and super-bar steel products, all environment-friendly ones. The company has also been recognized for its saving of energy costs through the installation of facilities and improved production process. The company has also been given credit for reuse of waste material and reduction of emission of pollutants with dramatic clean production activity, upgrading productivity in the process.
The company saved 2.6 billion won through its environment-friendly activity, reducing 2.1 percent in energy polluting environment and upgrading water quality by 10 percent. It built an environment management system, raising the awareness of environment in officers and staff and the company's image as an environment-friendly company.
The steelmaker exerted a considerable effort on mustering professional manpower through environmental education. It also raised the awareness for saving material among all employees including managers so that the company would be prepared to be an enterprise that creates a productive industrial society.
The firm plans to be a top "Green and Global" enterprise in the future by building environment, safety and quality integrated management system. It will be particularly mindful of making environment clean by giving life to scrap irons found thrown away every where so that the earth will be clean and keep it that way.
Under the vision that the company is a top Green and Global enterprise, it will continue to exert its effort for growth as an environment-friendly firm, developing the technology for reuse of material, zero emission system and the ways to treat insoluble waste water.
Capitalized at 496.57 billion won, the steelmaker located in Songhyun-dong, Dong-gu, Incheon, has 4,413 employees. Its sales revenue is projected at 5.081 trillion won. nw
